Die Whipple-Expedition, an der Möllhausen als Künstler und Naturaliensammler teilnahm, startete am 15. Juli 1853 in Fort Smith am Arkansas und sollte etwa dem 35.Grad nördlicher Breite folgen. Leiter der Expedition war Leutnant Amiel Weeks Whipple vom Ingenieur–Corps der Armee. Der Expeditionsweg führte auf ganzer Länge durch Indianerland, zunächst entlang des Canadian–River. Bei dem heutigen Sanford verließ die Expedition den Canadian und kreuzte am 17. September in einem schweren Tagesmarsch von 28 Meilen den Llano Estacado. Nach großen Strapazen erreichte die Expedition am 21. März 1854 Pueblo de los Angeles, das heutige Los Angeles.
Die von Möllhausen als Grundlage für die Illustrationen des Expeditionsberichts gefertigten Zeichnungen und Aquarelle wurden zunächst bei der Familie Whipple aufbewahrt und gelangte dann 1950 als Teil des Whipple–Nachlasses an die Oklahoma Historical Society. Dies waren 62 Originale, darunter 9 Aquarelle.
Außerdem besitzt die Oklahoma Historical Society 1 Lithographie nach einem verschollenen Original.
