Die amerikanische Regierung rüstete verschiedene Expeditionen aus, welche auf 4 Routen mögliche Eisenbahntrassen zur Westküste finden sollten. Die Expedition, der sich Möllhausen anschloß, startete am 15. Juli 1853 in Fort Smith am Arkansas und sollte dem 35.Grad nördlicher Breite folgen. Leiter der Expedition war Leutnant Amiel Weeks Whipple vom Ingenieur–Corps der Armee. Nach großen Strapazen erreichte die Expedition am 21. März 1854 Pueblo de los Angeles, das heutige Los Angeles.

Der offizielle Expeditionsbericht, der sogenannte Whipple–Report, besteht aus vier Teilen.

Im ersten Teil, dem Bericht über die Reise, gibt es 10 Farbtafeln, von denen 5 eindeutig Möllhausen zugeschrieben werden können. Von den 10 Textillustrationen ist bei 8 die Urheberschaft Möllhausens wahrscheinlich, eine ist sicher nach Leutnant J. C. Tidball gefertigt.

Der zweite Teil, dessen Thema Landschaft und Topographie sind, enthält eine Farbtafel, deren Vorlage sicher von Balduin Möllhausen stammt. Ob Vorlagen für Textillustrationen Möllhausen zuzuschreiben sind, kann nicht festgestellt werden.

Als dritter Teil ist ein Report upon the Indian Tribes enthalten, in dem Geschichte, Lebensumstände und Sitten der auf der Expeditionsroute lebenden Indianerstämme dokumentiert werden. Außerdem gibt es eine Vokabelsammlung verschiedener Indianersprachen und –dialekte. Dieser dritte Teil hebt den Whipple–Report weit über andere Expeditionsberichte hervor. Eine so ausführliche Beschäftigung mit den auf dem Reiseweg lebenden Indianerstämme war ungewöhnlich, stieß auf großes Interesse beim Publikum und erregte im Osten solches Aufsehen, daß ein 19 seitiger Bericht mit 15 Holzstichen im Jahr 1858 in Harper`s New Monthly Magazine abgedruckt wurde. Die Vorlagen für alle Abbildungen des dritten Teils, 7 Farbtafeln und 32 Schwarz–Weiß–Illustrationen stammen von Möllhausen.

Im vierten Teil, dem geographischen Fachbericht, wird bei 15 der 18 Textillustrationen als Zeichner der Originale Balduin Möllhausen genannt, außerdem gibt es noch eine Farbtafel nach Möllhausen.
